DID YOU KNOW?
Native Americans used porcupine quills to decorate clothing and other items.
Native American Indians played a team game known as "lacrosse". Using a
stick with a small basket attached at one end, they would catch and throw a
deerskin ball through high goal posts. People still play lacrosse today.
Inuit Native Americans would not fight each other if they were mad or angry.
Instead they would make up insulting songs about each other. A jury or
audience judged which person sang the rudest and most insulting songs. The
rudest one was declared the winner of the fight.
The stomach from a buffalo was used like a pot to cook in.
Native American Indians had great respect for nature. They would pray to the
plant spirits as they harvested their crops and if they stepped on an animal
by mistake they would apologize.
Some Native American Indians made special pouches to keep a child's
umbilical cord in. The pouch was made in the shape of an animal and hung
from the child's cradle at first and then worn by the child later. They
believed that this would keep the child safe.
Many Native American Indian warriors believed that it was braver to ride up
to an enemy and touch him than to kill him. This was called a coup. They had
a special stick that they used to touch the enemy. A warrior who did this
many times was greatly honored and admired.
